Migrant Justice Coalition
Working together to ensure the safety and improve the lives of migrant workers

What we do
The Migrant Justice Coalition brings companies, government agencies, advocacy groups, and consumers together to improve the rights of migrant workers in Thailand through a combination of technological innovation, stricter enforcement, and consumer-driven pressure.

The Problem
Labor abuses are common in Southeast Asia’s migrant labor camps and especially the fishing industry. Workers live in squalid conditions, without access to basic necessities, no advocates to help them, and often are treated as slaves, enduring physical and mental abuse and in some instances even face death.
MJC's Mission
The Migrant Justice Coalition aims to fight the abuse of migrant laborers all over Thailand, onshore and offshore, by working with local organizations to address improvement of current laws and enforcement of those laws; by raising consumer awareness through campaigns about the human cost of cheap seafood; and by convincing corporations to adopt ethical sourcing, traceability regulations, and migrant labor rights.
As Featured In
In this featured op-ed for the Bangkok Post, Migrant Justice Coalition founder Claire Kietduriyakul examines the hidden labor exploitation in Thailand’s seafood industry. The article discusses and brings into light the need for consumer accountability, industry-wide traceability, and the integration of ethical labor practices.
Future Plans
Expanding Partnerships and Sponsorships
The Migrant Justice Coalition plans to reach out to more organizations to solicit additional partners and sponsors who will support our efforts and encourage enforcement and systemic change through all sectors of Thai industries employing migrants.
Conduct Research into Migrant Labor Rights and Corporate Governance
The coalition will conduct further research and contribute to the areas of migrant labor rights and corporate governance among companies listed in Thailand, including some of the world’s largest food corporations whose extensive supply chains include migrant workers.
Develop an Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) framework
To enhance transparency and accountability, the coalition will develop a research-backed ESG framework for corporate labor audits and traceability standards for adoption by the industry. This was part of an internship working at the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET).
